ASB Bank Entry Planters
Enhancing a High-Traffic Walkway with Resilient Greenery
One of Auckland’s newly constructed buildings now serves as the hub for ASB Bank’s personal and commercial banking offices. The brief was to integrate custom-built concrete trough planters that not only supported lush greenery but also provided additional weight and durability to act as protective barriers for the building.
This site presented unique environmental challenges—positioned under a canopy, it faced shade and wind exposure while also experiencing intense heat during summer due to surrounding paving and building walls. To ensure the plants thrived in these conditions, we incorporated two WaterUps cells in each trough, maximising water efficiency within a relatively shallow soil base.
A carefully curated mix of plants was selected to create a natural, organic aesthetic as they matured. The transformation has turned the main walkway and building entrance into a lush, inviting nature walk. Throughout summer, the plants have flourished, requiring more attention on trimming and presentation rather than survival and watering. This has significantly improved efficiency for our servicing team, who visit just once a month—an ideal balance of sustainability and aesthetics in a demanding urban environment.
