Stone Wall Feature Bed – Mangawhai
Transforming a Coastal Stone Wall into a Thriving Garden – Mangawhai.
Set within a stunning coastal property on the outskirts of Mangawhai, we integrated sub-irrigation channels into a stone wall garden bed, seamlessly blending function with aesthetics. This feature borders the home’s alfresco area, complementing two vertical green walls installed by the GreenAir team and a 30-metre-long vegetable bed, which also serves as a retaining wall at the rear of the house.
To ensure efficient water distribution, we installed 22 interconnected sub-irrigation kits, forming a continuous reservoir running the length of each garden. Given the generous width of the beds, we laid the channels side by side, maximising wicking efficiency and ensuring consistent soil moisture levels throughout.
This wicking system has proven invaluable in an area where water can be scarce during dry summer months, providing a self-sustaining irrigation solution that minimises water waste while promoting healthy plant growth.
The transformation is remarkable—a lush, biodiverse garden now thrives along the retaining wall, brimming with fresh produce, chilli plants, citrus, and florals. This project not only enhances the natural beauty of the property but also demonstrates how sustainable gardening solutions can turn functional structures into vibrant growing spaces.
