Stone Wall Feature Bed

Category

Location
Mangawhai, New Zealand
A coastal property in Mangawhai required a reliable irrigation solution for an extensive stone wall garden bed bordering the home’s alfresco area. The exposed setting and seasonal water scarcity created challenges for maintaining consistent soil moisture across the long planting zones.
To address this, 22 interconnected sub-irrigation reservoir kits were installed, forming a continuous water channel along the length of the beds. Due to the generous bed width, channels were positioned side by side to maximise wicking efficiency and ensure even moisture distribution. The system integrates seamlessly alongside vertical green walls and a 30-metre vegetable bed that also functions as a retaining structure.
The result is a thriving, biodiverse coastal garden featuring produce, citrus, chilli plants, and ornamental species. This project demonstrates how integrated sub-irrigation can transform structural landscape elements into productive, water-efficient growing environments.
