Queen Street CBD Planter Upgrade

Location
Auckland, New Zealand
During a drought-affected Auckland summer, the high-profile planters along Queen Street began to suffer significant plant stress, requiring daily hand watering to maintain appearance and plant health.
To improve resilience and reduce water use, three planters were retrofitted with sub-irrigation reservoirs capable of holding up to 119 litres beneath the soil profile. The system delivers consistent deep moisture while minimising surface evaporation. At the same time, the planting palette was refreshed with more robust species suited to urban conditions.
The trial is being monitored for water consumption and plant performance, demonstrating a practical, water-efficient approach to maintaining greenery in high-traffic city environments.
